“Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you’ll find one at the end of your arm . . . . As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.” . . . . Audrey Hepburn

How can I help Second Chance?

Many share our vision of helping others. A vision where the Palm Beach County Community as a whole – including individuals, businesses, educational facilities, city and county government – embraces and supports individuals in recovery so they can find renewed meaning and purpose in their lives while becoming responsible, sober, contributing members of society. A second chance doesn’t happen by chance. And it is the community that benefits the most by providing a second chance to individuals serious about their long term recovery . . . one person at a time. Please join in investing in Second Chance by donating, volunteering, or advising us.

Volunteer

Some of the richest people in the world are not millionaires, they are volunteers! …Source unknown

If you are seeking a meaningful volunteer position where you help others help themselves in beginning on a career and/or educational path that contributes towards their long term recovery . . . a path that reintroduces them into the community . . . then Second Chance might be the service organization for you!

Senior Volunteer Coordinators Sought

Second Chance is actively recruiting several individuals to serve as Senior Volunteer Coordinators. Senior Volunteer Coordinators must be “true believers” in our mission, vision and values. We are also seeking people who truly enjoy assisting people and who are not a “glum lot.” You would be expected to commit to a minimum of 20-30 hours a month as you help manage some of the important and necessary elements of the organization.

Become a Community Mentor

Second Chance is committed to assigning each individual who completes a program with a Community Mentor. You would commit to mentoring a specific individual who is interested in either pursuing a career that you are in or familiar with or getting back into school in an area that you have already had experience with.

Mentoring is a supporting, caring relationship between an individual who shares knowledge, experience and wisdom with a person who is eager and willing to benefit from this exchange to enrich their journey and re-entry into the community – thus “Community Mentor.” Your commitment would be for a few hours a week, at mutually convenient times, over a period of six months. A Community Mentor is not a 12-Step sponsor and is not a substitute for one.

Second Chance will match you in terms of your work background and/or educational background with an individual who is interested in pursuing a career and/or educational path similar to yours. You could be retired, or you could still be in your profession, or still attending an educational institution. For example, you would be “matched” if you:

  • Have a background in accounting and finance and the individual has identified this as their career area.
  • Re-entered the world of college after an extended absence similar to what the individual is about to embark on.
  • Working in Hospitality, and the individual is interested in entering that profession.
  • Had to leave school and later returned to gain your GED, and a person can benefit from your experience.
  • Have a background in or are still working in the Trades, and an individual is interested pursuing that career path.
  • Are currently a Medical or Dental Tech, and an individual is seeking to enter that profession.

You will be valuable as a Community Mentor irrespective of your position, educational background, or age. There will be someone completing the program at second chance that can benefit from your experience and receive your experience and hope.

Some Community Mentors allow their Mentee to “shadow” them at work, introducing them to others in their office. Some may be able to network their Mentee with business contacts.

If you are interested, click to go to the online Volunteer Mentor Application Form. You will be contacted by Second Chance once we receive your application. We will not “match” you until we have the right fit, and will contact you if there is not a current or about-to-graduate individual meeting your background.

Volunteer two hours a week or month!

You may have at least a block of two hours of time to donate once a week, or once a month. Second Chance always has ongoing projects where volunteer help is needed and gratefully appreciated. Some projects require being in our Delray Beach office. Other projects can be done from home if you have a computer and include projects such as: data gathering and entry in Excel spread sheets; doing research on the web; and, making phone calls. Second Chance also seeks greeters and assistants for special events both in the office such as our monthly Life and Job Skill workshops, or future events in the community such as the annual Delray Affair and Garlic Festival. Give Margaret Young, our Program Director, a call at 561.404.0404 or send her an email if you want to volunteer, or have any questions about volunteering.
