Work… one of the three best predictors for long term sobriety

Extensive research conducted over the years by The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has shown that gainful employment is one of the three best predictors of long term success for a substance abuser. While SAMHSA research strongly recommends that vocational services should be an integral part of all substance abuse treatment programs, help of this type is not generally part of the substance abuse treatment package.

“If work is to be sustained and enduring lifestyle changes made, the vocational service provided must focus on pathways into careers, on job satisfaction, and on overcoming a variety of barriers to employment, as well as on the skills necessary for maintaining employment (SAMHSA).”
